Residents of Dubai or Abu Dhabi - congratulations. According to a lecture given at a futurology conference in London last week, the cities have already been earmarked as the winners of the decades to come because of one all-important feature, and it's not oil.
According to a new study by the Centre of Asia Pacific Aviation (Capa), Dubai International — currently the world's fourth busiest international airport — will occupy the number two slot from November 2011 in terms of passenger numbers, with London Heathrow at the top, going by the aviation body's forward (winter) schedule.
"Robust passenger traffic growth continues despite high fuel prices and growing economic uncertainty in Europe and the US," said Paul Griffiths, the chief executive of Dubai Airports, which manages Dubai International and the new Al Maktoum International Airport in Jebel Ali. "This is being driven by the addition of new routes and frequencies."
In June alone, Dubai International Airport handled a total of 4.07 million passengers, up 10.4 per cent from the 3.68 million in June 2010. The year to date daily average passenger throughput at the airport, meanwhile, reached 135,700 compared to 124,600 recorded during the first six months of 2010.
