Emirates will allow passengers flying economy class to pay to use its premium lounges at Dubai International Airport.

In an email to the basic tier – or Blue members – of its loyalty programme Skywards, the airline said that adult passengers can pay US$200 for four-hour access to the first-class lounge, and $100 to access the business class facility.

In October, Emirates introduced an advance seat selection fee in economy. The fees range from Dh50 for an adult for short-haul flights to Dh150 for longer flights such as to the US and Australia.

Tim Clark, the airline’s president said in October that new charges would be introduced for facilities such as extra baggage.

Net profit at the airline in the first half of its financial year dropped 75 per cent year-on-year to Dh786 million. The strong US dollar and increased competition resulting in lower average fares had an impact on the bottom line. More info
